Queer activism and artistic strategies

documenta 12 art education, 5 August, 1 pm, documenta 12 Halle

Queer activists from Germany and Poland examine artistic works at the documenta 12, discussing issues of feminism, queer visibility, hetero-sexism, radical social criticism, trans-sexuality and gender deconstruction.

The political and artistic strategies of queerer, gay, lesbian and trans* activists from Germany and Poland take different approaches to issues ranging from the relationship to National Socialism and the Holocaust, the significance of Outings and the politics of identity to cooperative work with other social-political movements such as feminism, antifascism or antiracism.

The activists’ interdisciplinary engagement with visual and political strategies are discussed in the light of works from Juan Davila, Ines Doujak, Dias & Riedweg, Jo Spence, Kerry James Marshall and others exhibiting at the documenta 12. Several aspects of these discussions will be presented at out Lunch Lectures. Issues such as visibility, the approach to pornography, the deconstruction of gender categories and the questioning of heterosexist social models will be discussed.
