One characteristic of his artistic practice is the extension to other fields of social and cultural work. He makes use of formats such as video, photography, performance and actions in the public domain just as much as his work as author, teacher, curator and political activist. The experimentation with alternative forms for the creation of social interaction and participation plays a central role.

Jacob is presenting two works in a complex room installation: the photo series Album III, newly reassembled for documenta 12, and a new work, A dance for those of us whose hearts have turned to ice. The latter contrasts the static nature of sculpture with the movement of dance, inspired by the dancer Françoise Sullivan and the sculptress Barbara Hepworth. Jacob accordingly translates the initial material into dance, sign language, interpretations, furniture, thus following the anarchist liberation of the two patronesses.
