Presentation in Vienna of documenta 12 Magazine N°1, Modernity?
The first issue of the documenta 12 Magazine was presented at the Wiener Secession on Monday, 26 February 2007. Modernity? addresses one of the three documenta 12 leitmotifs posed by Roger M. Buergel and Ruth Noack: "Is modernity our antiquity?"
Around 90 magazines and online media have come together in a worldwide network of editorial teams, under the directorship of Georg Schöllhammer, to address the documenta 12 leitmotifs and to raise their own subsequent questions. To quote from the editorial to the first issue of the magazine: "Which Modernity and whose Antiquity? The history of modernity can be told in many different ways. The authors featured in this issue therefore write about specific, local modernities, trace their dislocated or interrupted developments, explore counter or parallel models of modernity in which undeveloped or unintended transitions and unexpected connections between spaces and practices come to light."
The range of participating print media goes beyond the art sector, pervading all areas of society. In the course of the debate conducted on a global level over 300 essays, artists' contributions, interviews, photographic essays, documentation and fictional texts have been completed. A selection of these are to be published in a total of three issues of the magazine. The subsequent two issues pursue this debate under the titles Life! and Education:, the second and third documenta 12 leitmoifs.
